Phones damaged due to physical abuse and moisture will not be repaired, even for a fee. These types of damage void the warranty. They will be returned un-repaired, and Motorola will not pay return postage.
Here are some tips for determining if your phone falls into one of these damage categories. Assess your phone to save time, money and aggravation.
Physical abuse
Repairable phones are in generally good condition except for one obvious issue – a cracked screen, broken button, or inability to turn on, etc. Phones that have been abused show signs of sustained neglect or dramatic damage. Signs of physical abuse include:
Systematic damage to the phone. Phones that exhibit scrapes, scratches, dings and other damage that has accumulated over a period of abuse and indifferent care. Purely cosmetic scratches are not by themselves signs of abuse, but serious, repeated damage due to lack of ordinary care are generally obvious.
Dramatic damage clearly resulting from an accident or violent event. Phones that are smashed, run over, dropped from great heights, exposed to fire or extreme heat or otherwise damaged through rough treatment.
Liquid or moisture damage
Phones that are submerged in water or exposed to excessive steam, rain or other moisture will register that moisture on the special indicators placed in Motorola phones. There are several in the phone, including one, usually, in the battery compartment. If the round white dot has turned colour it indicates excessive moisture and voids the warranty.
