Hearing/Speech
Q. Which handsets are compatible with hearing aids?
A. Every Motorola GSM and 3G mobile phone is fitted with a T-Coil (telecoil) earpiece speaker to facilitate coupling with compatible hearing aids. All hearing aids that are rated "User Compatible" (per the international standard IEC 60118-13) should be able to use any Motorola mobile phone with their hearing aids, either in microphone mode or in T-Coil (telecoil) mode. We recommend two things for hearing aid users:
1.) Try a few Motorola handsets in the store to check for any unwanted interference.
2.) Confirm with the hearing aid manufacturer/agent that their hearing aid(s) are rated as "User Compatible" per IEC 60118-13 or equivalent.
Q. What's the best phone for hearing aid wearers?
A. There is not just one phone that is “the best” for hearing aid wearers. Every Motorola product is unique - just like you. Hearing aids are also distinctive, both with respect to the user settings and the internal design/manufacture. Therefore, one cannot expect one model of hearing aid to necessarily experience the same interference issues as another. Australian Hearing and the Australian Communications and Media Authority provide consumer advice on this Click here to view the Hearing aids and Mobile Phones (PDF 296 KB) document. Australian Hearing conclude that most hearing aid users who can successfully use a normal fixed line telephone will be able to use a CDMA or 3G mobile telephone without the need for an accessory in most situations. To accommodate users with a wide range of needs, Motorola provides products with various features. Some examples of features that may appeal to users with hearing needs include Text Messaging, Visual Alerts, and Vibracall® Alert. You can review the feature details in the Featured Product section to find a product suitable for you.
Q. Which mobile phone technology is better for hearing aid wearers?
A. No single mobile phone technology is always “the best” for everyone. The various digital mobile phone technologies in Australia - GSM, CDMA, and 3G - all work differently. (Note the 3G system will eventually replace the current CDMA service.) Operating using different radio frequencies and modulation schemes, these air interfaces represent different ways the mobile phone communicates to the mobile phone base station tower. The potential for interference exists regardless of the manufacturer of the phone, provider of mobile phone service, or manufacturer of the hearing aid. However, research shows that there are some hearing aid wearers that experience excellent performance and have no problem with any of the digital technologies. Australian Hearing conclude that most hearing aid users who can successfully use a normal fixed line telephone will be able to use a CDMA or 3G mobile telephone without the need for an accessory in most situations. Evaluate interference by testing different phone models and mobile phone technologies to find the ‘best fit’ for you. Hearing aid users should test the mobile phone with their hearing aid before purchasing the phone. Some carriers and retailers may allow a trial period where you can test out the phone of your choice.
